Mandatory Research Security Training Requirement
A new mandatory Research Security training requirement will be implemented at Emory beginning Dec. 1, 2025, in alignment with federal mandates and concurrent with the Annual Certification Cycle that runs from Dec. 1, 2025, to Feb. 28, 2026.
Why is this training required?
This training is mandated by the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 and NSPM-33 and is increasingly being included in the terms and conditions of subawards from other institutions. Federal agencies such as NIH and NSF have begun enforcing these requirements, with additional mandates taking effect in the coming months.
What does the training cover?
The RS training addresses key areas including:
- Foreign travel and foreign components
- Export controls and cybersecurity
- Disclosure requirements (including NIH Other Support)
- Insider threat awareness
- Foreign talent recruitment programs
- Data sharing and other support
How will training be completed?
Emory has developed a comprehensive training module hosted in the Brainier Learning Management System, which consolidates all federal requirements into a single, approximately 45-minute session. This module is regularly updated to reflect evolving federal guidance.
To acccess the training, log into Brainier via PeopleSoft Self Service-Learning Management prior to clicking on this link to access the training. Alternatively, log into Brainier via PeopleSoft Self Service Learning Management and search for training modules “Research Security Training” to access the training module.
Completion of the training will be tracked in the Investigator Portal, currently under development, which will provide a dashboard for compliance reporting accessible to researchers, ADRs, administrative staff, OSP, and RCRA. A pilot of this dashboard will launched in October with a select group of researchers.
Note: Complete the training in Brainier and update your disclosure profile in Insight for full compliance.
- Disclosure updates in Insight (available Dec. 1 onwards) can be made here
- For additional disclosure related information, link to a comprehensive resource is here
Who needs to complete the training?
All Covered Individuals (persons responsible for design, conduct or reporting of research) are required to complete the training.
What happens if training is not completed?
Similar to disclosure updates, completion of training is mandatory. Failure to complete the required training will result in delays in proposal processing and prevent award setup.
We encourage all faculty engaged in federally funded research to complete the training as soon as possible to ensure compliance and avoid delays in proposal submissions or funding.
